Trolley Case or Backpack?

Going to Europe on a shoestring? Are you deciding whether to use a trolley case or a backpack?
It is really a bad idea to use a trolley case if you are going to travel by the metro or subway because escalator are not so common. You will have to carry your weighted trolley case up and down flights of staircase either to get to or from the train.
